What is the difference between Hard Waxing and Strip Waxing? The difference is simple and the results are fantastic.
With Strip waxing the wax is applied to the skin, then after it has cooled a strip of cloth is applied on top of the wax and the wax is removed. This method of waxing is very harsh on the skin.
Hard waxing is the exact opposite. When using hard wax the wax is applied directly to the skin and removed as soon as it hardens, using only the wax to remove it. Hard wax is better for people with sensitive skin.

I have been going to Reflections of You (ROY) for several years. The staff and services are unbeatable. I love my hair cut and color every time I go. I also LOVE Surface hair products. Been using them for over a year now. The products and services are worth EVERY penny.

I'm a natural brunette but through the years I have gone from highlights, to full caramel blonde, to short hair, to SOCAP extensions, only to come back to my ORIGINAL hair and brunette roots. Trust me. Absolutely fantastic salon experience! I was super nervous as I was chopping off A LOT of my hair. Sara was great, talked to me about my style, what I did, what I liked and didn't like about my hair. I love this place because it's close to my house, reasonably priced, and they do a decent job. In my experience, they don't do anything A-MA-ZING, or mind-blowing, but they do the basics and they do it well.

I've been here twice for a cut and color; I have a lot of hair, so foils take forever and day. Tisa always seems to have the patience to do all of them and do them right, which I definitely appreciate.

The shampoo lady is super sweet, and goes out of her way to make sure you're as comfortable as can be in those ridiculous chairs (bonus = the chairs recline so you can kick your feet up and really relax!)

The price is high (est. $150ish for cut/highlights + tip), but as is to be expected around this area. They also sell a bunch of pricey shampoos and other products, but aren't overly pushy if you politely decline.

For about 10 years now I've been a client of Heather's. She began by working to correct the color damage I'd caused using over the counter hair dye products and updated the style to take it into the 21st century. It's typically thick and frizzy with some stubborn waves. Heather was able to create a smooth & unfussy look that works both professionally and personally. CND Shellac 14 Day Manicure - I Tried It!

The claim is a 14 day chip-free manicure that stays shiny and fresh.

My mission was to put it to the test.

So began my experiment with CND's Shellac polish, the first 'hybrid' nail color that blends the strength and high-shine finish of a gel nail treatment with the color selection and easy application of a nail polish.

In case you're not familiar with the gel nail craze, it's much different than your run of the mill manicure. In this process, thin layers of gel are applied to the nails and cured under an ultraviolet light to create a highly durable, glossy finish, and can reportedly last a few weeks.

This process is gaining popularity in the U.S. (it's already big in Asia and Eastern Europe) because of the non-yellowing, odorless, and chip free formulas that not only strengthens nails, but provides the perfect base for funky and flirty designs. However, caveats include returning to the salon for removal by soaking the whole hand in acetone, (or drilling the nailbed), along with a lack of color options.

CND's new Shellac formula says it's a game-changer because, unlike gels, the formula is easily removed in ten minutes with acetone-soaked wraps that expose only the nailbed to the remover, with no drilling, filing or other mechanical manipulation required. Not to mention that it's launching with 12 trend-focused shades, with 12 more shades coming in the Fall.

But how well does it work? Let's get to it!

A Shellac manicure consists of a UV base coat, two coats of color, and a UV top coat. Hands are placed inside of a UV lamp drier in between each coat, with each process taking seconds to cure.

As CND manicurist Candice Manacchio applied my Shellac, I noticed that the manicure took place almost in reverse. Cuticles are first pushed back and nails prepped with a swipe of acetone to prep for color. After polishing, the more indulgent hand massage and lotions are applied, so as not to risk interfering with the polish application or color adherence to the nail.

My strategy was to go with a neutral sheer white shade, since I wanted the results to last as long as possible. (That, and I'm cheap.) While bright shades are great fun, they do show the tell-tale half-moon sign of cuticle growth far sooner. Manacchio suggested a coat of the opaque milky Romantique followed by a coat of of the sheer shimmer Negligee for a clean yet polished-looking finish that blends the best of both worlds.

While going through the steps, I gleaned some pretty interesting chit-chat from Manacchio. Turns out, she takes a train from her home in Connecticut to New York every two weeks to refill Kerry Washington's acrylic manicure while the actress has rare down time between Broadway performances of Race. "What, no Shellac for Kerry?" I asked. "No, she needs the extra strength of acrylics," was the insider reply.

Our conversation was interrupted by the last cycle of the drier ending. It had only been 25 minutes, and I had received the full treatment and was all done.

When the mani is finished, you're good to go -- no drying time is needed since your nails have set to a hard, shiny finish. You can even reach right into your handbag to get your keys, which I couldn't help but gingerly do with all fingers protectively splayed, not quite believing that my just-painted-two-minutes-ago nails wouldn't smudge in the process. They didn't.

For the next week, I was amazed that my nails held up the just-stepped-out-of-the-salon look beautifully, with no further commitment or work from me.

On day seven, an overly-zealous vacuuming session broke a nail when the vacuum didn't quite make it under the bed like I expected it to, and my right index finger jammed against the handle. My nail may have survived if I had a thicker traditional gel layer on it, though the break was clean and didn't cause any polish to peel. I snapped a photo for the record, and then filed the nail down -- and no one seemed to be any the wiser to it.

On the big finale of day 14, I was amazed at how the high-gloss finish was still sparkling and fresh. Even when I've had regular gel manicures, the shiny topcoat dulls after a few days, and I reapply a clear topcoat two or three times to get a lacquered finish comparable to what I had on Shellac's day 14.

And my lighter colored strategy worked. If you look really closely, you can see that the cuticle grew-out, but it's virtually unnoticeable to other people unless they're particularly nosy. I actually think that CND is playing it safe by claiming this manicure can last two weeks, because I can definitely push at least a week more out of my current nails, if not even more.

I also think this is a great option for weddings and other events. No need to get up extra early to fit a harried trip to the salon in on the day of a special occasion-- you can instead comfortably Shellac a week before and be confident that your nails will look fresh and unchipped for the big day.

The one drawback is that similar to its cousin, the gel, Shellac can only be applied in salons. It requires less skill than sculpting a gel nail, but still uses UV and removal technology that is not yet directly available to consumers.

Shellac will also be priced about 50% more than a regular manicure, and you can find participating salons at this link.

But this frugalista thinks it's well-worth the cost of admission, in terms of what you save on touch-ups, salon visits and your sanity.

The best cut, style & color I have ever had for my very curly hair. Anita shaped my hair beautifully to frame my face, she left some length, and cut my hair in a way that made it very manageable. Also, the color was the most flattering I've ever had. Anita didn't try to persuade me to have my hair combed out in a way that would straighten it. I left with my curls looking shiny & beautiful. Also the massaging chairs you sit in when you are having your hair washed are incredibly relaxing. The salon is very low-key & professional.

I was asked to be a model for a curly cut class conducted by Heather. She did an excellent job instructing her hairdressers that were there working on their own models. It was a fun evening seeing everyone transform into their new haircut. Heather explained to all of us the dynamics of curly hair and how to keep our curls from getting dry by products and blowdrying. She explained each step and product she used which was the Deva products. I have always straightened my hair and even got a brazilian blowout last summer. I have been a client of Heather and Reflections of You in Fairfax since the day they opened. I have always found the employees to be helpful, courteous and professional. The receptionist is especially patient in helping me find an appointment to fit my crazy schedule. In my opinion their prices are definitely competitive - I took my daugther to get her haircut at another place that was a little closer to home (and I assumed less expensive) and it was actually more expensive and the cut was not that great. I wont do that anymore! Heather knows me, knows my hair, and helps me create a look that works with my personality and lifestyle. I have sent countless numbers of friends (and people who just ask about my great haircut and color) to her and they have all become clients. Your hair is a "reflection of you" and you know a "bad suit" when you see one.. No bad suits here!!

I was long overdue for a haircut and desperate for a qualified stylist who actually understands what I want. I was able to secure an appointment with Heather as she was kind enough to squeeze me in at the end of her day. She was very gracious and surprisingly energetic for someone who had been on her feet all day. She listened carefully to what I wanted and then made a few suggestions based on the condition of my hair. The final result was better than I had hoped for and a wonderful experience all around. Everyone I had contact with was professional and personable. The whole time I was there I had no doubt that my satisfaction was their top priority and sadly these days that isn't common. I don't get my hair cut often enough but the next time I'm ready it will be with Heather. Thanks to all the staff that helped to make my visit so enjoyable.

After I spent quite some time browsing the web and reading reviews about the salons in the area, i decided to try ROY. I had thick heavy long hair for 3 years now, and I was a little afraid to trust someone in doing a good job cutting it to a medium length while giving it a nice shape. I'm the mom of a 10-months-old, and I'm starting nursing school next week, so I wanted something age(27) and school-appropriate, easy to manage, feminine, neat, but a little playful. I walked in to ROY without having an appointment. Lucky me, the place was quiet(Wednesday around noon), and the receptionist assigned me to Sarah. After introducing ourselves, she asked about the ways I usually treat/style my hair, and to try to describe in three words what I'd like my new hair to be. So, I told her the above mentioned attributes and it seemed that she got a grip of what I wanted. After a pretty good hair wash/massage(by Lale who offered to trim my eyebrows, but understood that that was not the purpose of my visit, so she didn't push it), Sarah started to cut my hair. I appreciated it that she took her time and always made sure that i was ok with what she was doing next and that I liked what she did so far. The whole experience from walking in to walking out probably took about 1.5-2 hours, but it definitely worth it, 'cause I got a great hair cut!!!! Also, I must mention that she had a professional attitude and she was gentle with my hair(not like the lady who pulled out half of may hair the last time I got a hair cut ). She did tell me about the products that would benefit my hair, but she was not pushy in any way. While getting ready to leave, I took a peak into the mirror again, and who I'm guessing is the owner or manager of the place, kindly asked me if everything was ok with my haircut. I said yes, i just needed to get used to it a bit (I got bangs- hadn't have them since high school). One more thing, I almost forgot, the price. The whole thing cost me 45 dollars - I say this is a pretty neat price for a wash, cut, dry, and style. I was/am extremely satisfied. I love my new look, and guess what? my husband likes it too. Ok, I hope I said it all....ROY- great place, Sarah-great stylist!!!

We've all had at least one horriffic hair experience which traumatizes us for life. We end up frantic and running for a towel to cover our hideous rendition of our hair. I had such an experience a few months ago, which turned out to be a blessing in disguise. During a weekend trip to New York, I thought I would get my hair colored. My coloring looked like my three-year old took some crayola markers and unevenly colored on my hair. I was a complete mess.

As soon as I came back, I called my friend whom recently had her hair done [which I loved] at Reflections of You. She ranted and raved about Adam, whom I was initially hesitant to use, since I lost all trust in any unfamiliar stylists. She was so confident that Adam could fix my coloring that she offered to pay if I didn't his work--how could I pass a deal like that up? I AM SO GLAD I LISTENED TO HER! Not only did he fix my coloring, but he is the ONLY person that is able to touch my hair from this point on!

I had my birthday this past weekend and Adam gave me an amazing updo that I will never forget. I felt so glamorous and trendy. He really made me feel beautiful and above all UNIQUE. I had endless compliments all night from strangers and friends. He did an amazing job.

I have been going to Adam for years now. He is incredible with color and has helped me transform my hair from a deep brown to a bright violet red to an auburn honey brown/blonde. I have always been happy with the results and I am usually pretty resistant change. I am usually very "plain Jane" but have a desire to be more adventurous with my look. Adam is aware of this fact and has managed to help me find a middle ground that has helped me stay trendy but not be too extreme where I feel that the hair does not suit me. Besides his amazing skills as a hairdresser Adam is also the sweetest person who really understands his clients.

THICK, STRAIGHT AND COARSE are qualities that best define my hair. I have two choices with my hair, keeping it long or short. Being that I am a young professional man that has a clean-cut image, I like to keep my hair short and fresh. i first went to reflections of you after i received a gift certificate from my work and i have been going regularly ever since. adam always does exactly what i want while still offering his professional opinion.when i found out i would have to start straightening my hair for work adam was nice enough to offer to help me out so i was going to ROYF almost two times a week... he would always manage to squeez me in. all the staff is super nice and welcoming its very clean and the iced tea is delicious :]

You've got to visit this salon and you'll be sold! A great full service salon where you can relax with a massage or a pedicure and beautify with a facial and a new haircut, color or both! All the comforts of a trendy salon without the pretentious attitudes that tend to go with the fancy salons. The music is always soothing but never the same! They offer you your choice of coffee or wine. I love it!

For about 10 years now I've been a client of Heather's. She began by working to correct the color damage I'd caused using over the counter hair dye products and updated the style to take it into the 21st century. It's typically thick and frizzy with some stubborn waves. Heather was able to create a smooth & unfussy look that works both professionally and personally. Strangers frequently stop and ask who does my hair. One person even took a picture of it! More importantly, going into the salon is a break. The staff is so friendly, it's like visiting with a bunch of friends. Lalee is exceptional; simply the best!. My hair is so clean when she's done with it - you'll never find this quality anywhere else.

I have been going to ROY and Tisa for a few years now and I absolutely LOVE her!! What I really like about her and her technique is that each time I get a hair cut/color, she cuts it a bit differently and the outcome is always funky and cool....rock starish quality and that is what I am going for! Another thing I have to say about Tisa is that she can work with what I am asking of her. I often have grand ideas for my hair...sometimes unrealsitic, but Tisa listens, takes her time, puts her art into it , and always comes up with a solution that fits my personality and my look. She works magic and I think she must be telepathic in this way!! Additionally, she has great color-vision and foresight. Her advice has always been sound and she has been honest and up front with me every time. These are a few reasons why I keep going to her and to the salon.

I have also had a massage at ROY that was fabulous. They offer interesting facials, pedicures and manicures, massages, and services, involving chocolate ( can't go wrong with that). While I would agree that ROY's prices are a little steep, it has been worth it for me. The owners are wonderful people, too. I know that they help many high school students gain experience while working in the salon. I think that is tremendous community spirit! I think ROY keeps contemporary and competetive because the owners are constantly evolving and offering new and different specials and products. They are ahead of the game in their business sensibilities. Additionally, the physical setting of the salon is pleasing; bright, modern, and clean ( they even offer wine as you relax!!) . The massage chairs are heavenly and the shampoo assistant, Laleh, is my favorite human on the planet!! Her head massages while shampooing are incredible!! My head is left tingling and refreshed. I look forward to Laleh and I try to schedule my appointments when I know she is at the salon. No joke! The other stylists and receptionists are always friendly and helpful, too! The place is always bustling and everyone in the salon appears to be where they want to be......at ROY!

I have been with Reflections of you for almost 5 years now. For last couple times, when I got my hair cut done from there, I was very disappointed. I always book my appointments with senior stylist, it turns out that the senior stylist starts your hair cut but someone else completes it which is very unprofessional. I am not paying $66 for hair cut to get the blow dry and style done by a junior person. This happened to me second time now. My hair is completely messed up.If this is the way they treat their loyal customers, I am never going back there

I just got home from my first hair appointment with Rebecca at ROY, and I can not stop looking at my amazing hair!! Before I say anything else, I should say I have a lot of experience with BAD salons in this area, I have cried in my car after cuts and color more times than I'd like to admit. This was not that kind of experience.

From the moment I called to make an appointment I had high hopes. The receptionist, Kaitlyn is fabulous. She was so friendly on the phone and in person I immediately felt at ease. Then I met Rebecca. I am getting married in 7 months, and I was so unhappy with my hair and want it to look beautiful for our wedding. From bad color, terrible split ends and a mediocre cut I left with super model hair.

Rebecca sat down with me and went over everything she was going to do in detail and gave me the price for everything!! I have never had a salon do that before, I would always be surprised with a mystery number not previously discussed. She listened to everything I wanted and my concerns and was very realistic about what we'd be able to do.

Did I mention my color was awful before? It was a faded red (box job) and I wanted to go Reece Witherspoon blonde. What Rebecca did for my color is a miracle!! She revived my sad limp hair, and it is beautiful and far better than I could have expected. She was also very honest with me that if she made me as blonde as I wanted in one process, my hair would be fried. I'm happy she told me, so now we can do it in steps, and keep my hair from additional major damage. But this color doesn't look like an in-between color - it's beautiful!

Not only were Kaitlyn and Rebecca fantastic, the whole staff was friendly and cheerful. I made an appointment to come back in a month to keep my hair looking fantastic for our wedding. Now I am confident my hair will look the best it has in years for our wedding and I am so happy and excited. I've finally found a salon in NOVA that I want to keep going back to!

What a great place. I'm a guy who cares about how he looks but doesn't want to spend a ton of time on his appearance. Rebecca understood my needs and gave me exactly what I wanted. Her gregarious but not overbearing personality makes the experience enjoyable while her knowledge and talent make me look good. You'll pay a little bit more than at discount hair places, but it's definitely worth it. In fact, just after I moved here, I got a terrible haircut - one I thought was irreparable - for $14 right down the road. ROY fixed it and I've been going ever since.

My stylist is Rebecca. She deserves all the credit in the world! She is young, full of life and very personable. She had to take time off for a few short weeks (for an EXTREMELY understandable situation!!) While she was out she suggested I see another stylist (her name escapes my mind, but she did a nice job...) I really appreciated that Rebecca kept my information in the computer up-to-date so that the stylist could take care of me! The front desk called to let me know Rebecca will be returning to work this week and I was able to set up my next appointment. She is such a joy to be around and I am really looking forward to seeing her again! I am impressed by her ability to determine to perfect cut and color for me based on my skine tone and face shape. She takes in to accound that I don't like to spend hours on my hair in the morning. And she even TAUGHT me how to style my hair! I never write reviews, but I am just so thrilled that she is able to get back to work and I can't wait to see her again! Hm... Maybe I should schedule my appointment sooner!

just moved here and tried this salon out. I read the reviews on here and trusted that I would have a wonderful experience. While I enjoyed my glass of wine, polite chit-chat and rose upon my leaving, I feel as though my fee of $100 for partial/full foils was overpriced. The hair dresser did touch-up work to my highlights which had be done 6 weeks prior. she over bleached my hair (an entire foiled area that was turned white broke off!!) and left a strong line on my roots so that when i brush my hair back or put it up i have a noticeable line of where the new highlights were added.
I loved it initially but I did not get a full blow dry as that would cost $30 more dollars.. which is absurd!!

*** After posting this I was contacted and offered a complimentary appointment. But to be honest, why would anyone feel comfortable going back to a salon that messed up so badly in the first place? No refund was offered and it was just a caddy conversation with the receptionist. I would never suggest this place to anyone, especially as a salon calling themselves the "color specialists"

****** another update. After contacting the owner, I recieved a quick response and understanding to my situation. She offered a refund, and her apologies. I think this salon has great management, and atmosphere .. not everyone is perfect, and I guess it was my bad luck to stumble upon the people I did.

I am very happy with my hair- I got a shorter cut done by Sara a few days ago. First impressions are everything: She looked and acted professionally and had a really pretty hair style *that I now want!* She was pleasant and did a wonderful job...the real test was waking up the next day and being able to do it myself. My hair has more volume and body than it has had in a while. I often drive right by this salon, so I am glad I gave them a shot. Will definitely go back for her to do my color and will report here!

I have been going to Reflections of You Salon and Spa for about nine months now, and I love it!!! I moved to the area and I was very hesitant to try a new salon. The staff of ROY Salon made me feel very welcome and the salon is EXTREMELY clean, which is sometimes hard to find. They offer me a drink and some kind of dessert every time I go. I never feel out of place there! The environment is very relaxing and welcoming. Their shampoo chairs are amazing. They recline and massage!!!

I see a variety of stylists there, because I like the different points of views from different stylists. All of the people that have cut and colored my hair have done an amazing job, and for that I am very, very happy!!!

I also know that the stylists go to several styling and trend classes throughout the year, which is awesome. They are on top of the trends!!! Yaya!!! I love Reflections of You Salon and Spa!!!

How many of us have purchased an over the counter facial product repetitively, to only be dissatisfied with the results? I can raise my hand to this. Our skin is so different and finding a product that actually works and is in our price range is difficult. Let me introduce you to Dr. Grandel, a German based skin care line centered on Epigran; a wheat germ based active ingredient. The Oregon division of OSHA’s (Occupational Safety and Health Administration) recent claims that samples of the Brazilian Blowout Professional Smoothing Solution contained between 4.85% and 10.6% Formaldehyde has been proven to be incorrect.
Doug Schoon, a leading scientist and expert who works with state, federal and international regulators to develop beauty industry related standards and regulations with regards to ingredient safety, consumer testing and cosmetics registrations/regulations, says that the test methods used by Oregon OSHA do not properly measure Formaldehyde in water based cosmetic products. The tests conducted by OSHA actually measured a completely different substance called "Methylene Glycol," and incorrectly referred to this substance as "Formaldehyde." Methylene Glycol is the key functioning ingredient used in most professional hair smoothing treatments currently on the market.
Schoon reports the following:
It is important to understand that Formaldehyde is not a cosmetic ingredient and never has been; it is a gas that cannot be added to cosmetics, and only exists in tiny trace amounts. Misunderstanding the nature of Formaldehyde has led to the incorrect belief that 37% Methylene Glycol is the same as 37% Formaldehyde, when in fact, 37% Methylene Glycol contains only trace amounts of Formaldehyde; less than 0.05% to be precise.
Flaws in the testing methods used by Oregon’s division of OSHA actually cause the creation of additional Formaldehyde that is not normally found in the product, which led to Oregon OSHA erroneously reporting levels of Formaldehyde that cannot possibly exist in the product, especially given that Formaldehyde is a gas. Once again, what OSHA is actually reporting, is the amount of Methylene Glycol in the product, not Formaldehyde.
The only method that accurately measures Formaldehyde in water based cosmetic products is called "13C-NMR," and OSHA did not conduct this particular type of testing. Had OSHA performed this test, they would have discovered that only tiny traces of Formaldehyde are detectable in these products, usually well below 0.0045%.
When heated to very high temperatures, Methylene Glycol can release small amounts of Formaldehyde gas into the air. Research that I have performed on Methylene Glycol containing hair smoothing and straightening products has shown, however, that as long as these types of products are used properly, and in well-ventilated areas, both Cosmetologists and their client's exposure to the Formaldehyde gas are well below the safe levels established by OSHA.

Done are the days of tight chignons and french twists. This Fall's runway trends are a soft and romantic take on the grunge trends of the 90's. Next season's styling will be greatly influenced by the designers of Fall Fashion week. Upstyles this fall are undone and slightly messy with a lived in-slept on look. The noncalant effortless styles of this season are always chic and are very hot for your formal events this fall and winter.
Variations of the low Chignons were featured by several designers on the runway: Statement making severe side parts paired with an undone and off center loose bun go easily from day to night. Try pulling some strands out of your chignon for an unpolished look. The pieces can be stick straight for a more graphic look or waved for something more romantic. A great variation of this look can be achieved with an undone french twist slightly messy and teased gently through the crown. Extractions - Often performed by estheticians during a facial, extractions involve gently coaxing plugs of sebum and cellular debris from the pore. By removing blackheads, milia, and soft closed comedones the overall number of breakouts can be reduced. Estheticians are not permitted to extract cysts or serious lesions. These may only be extracted by a dermatologist through surgical methods.

Chemical peels- Deeply exfoliate the skin using an alpha-hydroxy, beta-hydroxy, or glycolic acid. Light chemical peels improve acne by removing dead skin cells and helping to clear pores of debris. ‐ Retouch for Smoothing and Curl Reduction follow original directions, with Smoothing Cream being applied first
to new growth, processed as desired then combed through ends to smooth reversion as desired. In Smoothing, press
new growth as above, limited pressing maybe used on previously treated area. Smoothing Bath may be applied as in
original application.
2. How long does it last and take to do?
Lasts: In salon average application:
A. Smoothing ‐ 3 to 5 months ‐ 3 hours
B. Curl Reduction ‐ 2 to 4 months ‐ 90 minutes
C. Smoothing Bath ‐ 6 to 8 weeks ‐ 20 minutes
3. What Type of Hair Can I Use It On?
‐ Not recommended for fine hair lifted beyond two levels or hair that has been treated with color remover.
‐ May be used on all qualifying hair textures.
‐ Evaluate hair condition to determine if the hair qualifies and desired result is achievable:
‐ Smoothing and Curl Reduction may be performed on hair that is up to 25% highlighted*
and is in good condition. Percentage of highlights and condition applies to individual sections of

The sun protection factor can be misleading. Very little diffrence from SPF 15 to SPF 25 it goes from 93% uvb rays to 96%. The FDA does try to discourage the companies from making misleading or flaunting of higher numbers that have very little diffrence. Don't think that SPF 50-100 means you can stay in the sun longer or you will need not reapply the cream this is not the case. But many still market this way. Remember apply 15-30 minutes before going out and reapply as required. The UVB rays cause sunburn while UVA cause skin damage. Salon Today Investigates Brazilian Keratin Services

This emerging category has people talking. Salons, manufacturers, clients, consumer press and bloggers are all abuzz: “Where are the opportunities? What are the concerns?” This first in a series of SALON TODAY special reports goes In Depth to get the info and answers you need to form your own opinions on the most current—and most controversial—topics impacting beauty and business.

Spend a little time Googling “keratin services” or “Brazilian keratin treatment” and you’ll find a dizzying amount of website postings. Sort through enough of them and you’ll likely come to this conclusion: Consumers are interested in the service because it promises to make curly, frizzy and even damaged hair sleek, smooth and healthy looking. With service tickets averaging $300-$600, and reaching as high as $800, many salons want to meet this demand and offer keratin treatments. But they are unsure how and where to find credible facts, products and education.

To add to the confusion, online surfers will find an assortment of strong claims, both positive and negative, with likely exaggerations on both sides.

What It Is, Where It Started
Keratin treatments to smooth hair began in rural Brazil more than 10 years ago. Someone discovered that certain preservative chemicals seemed to link keratin to hair, resulting in frizz-free locks that lasted for months. This got the attention of Brazilian cosmetic manufacturers, who began testing and formulating.

Researchers discovered that when the cuticle is open, the protein keratin can be introduced, along with cosmetic-grade formaldehyde, which is known to cross-link proteins in hair. Then, the cuticle is sealed with multiple-pass flatironing at 450 degrees. During the flatironing, the heat can cause fumes to be released. This step—the fumes—is the center of the keratin treatment confusion and controversy.

Facts and Fiction
According to Doug Schoon, a chemist and president of Schoon Scientific in Dana Point, California, any keratin treatment product that supposedly contains formaldehyde actually uses an ingredient called formalin. Formaldehyde is a gas and, as such, can’t be a liquid, so could not be added as a cosmetic ingredient.

Schoon explains that formalin is created when dry formaldehyde gas is reacted with water to create a new and different substance called methylene glycol.

“Methylene glycol is a totally different chemical with completely different properties and characteristics,” he says. “For years, this name mistake has been made around the world by scientists, doctors and regulators, until last December when formalin’s name was officially changed in the International Nomenclature of Cosmetic Ingredients (INCI) dictionary.”

“When you heat formalin,” Schoon adds, “it can convert back into the original form and release a small amount of formaldehyde gas in the air.”

Schoon is currently working with a manufacturer to measure the amount of formaldehyde fumes stylists may be exposed to when using flatirons with formalin-containing products. He says it’s possible cosmetologists who perform service after service may be exposed to excessive levels, but very likely a source-capture ventilation system can reduce those levels, effectively removing the gas from the air before it’s inhaled.

Online postings about formaldehyde being an irritant and potential carcinogen are correct. It’s associated with nasal and brain cancer, according to the National Cancer Institute. However, most posters aren’t aware it’s a gas released during some keratin treatments, and the FDA does not regulate the amount of formalin in cosmetics, making the discussions of “legal amounts” in bottles moot. Regulation occurs through the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA), which has strict guidelines for maximum allowable worker exposure to formaldehyde gas.

Food and Drug Association (FDA) spokesperson, Suzan Curzan, e-mails: “The FDA doesn’t have specific regulations that prohibit or restrict the use of formaldehyde [formalin] in cosmetic preparations, and is unaware of safety data indicating that Brazilian keratin products pose a health hazard to consumers, under the labeled conditions of use.”

That’s why, for instance, the FDA takes no issue with nail hardeners containing up to 5-percent formalin. These products are more than a “coating,” says Schoon. “Formalin is reactive to proteins and creates a chemical link or bridge with them.”

Like the second step of a perm process, keratin treatments with formalin don’t break bonds in the hair, but do “fix” the keratin in place, semi-permanently. Whether ingredients other than formalin act identically is unclear.

Second Generation Products
The success—and confusion—about Brazilian-style keratin products opened the door for a slew of “formalin-free” formulations, currently calling themselves “formaldehyde-free.” But keratin alone cannot create the desired, long lasting, “frizz-busting” results. So the theory is that some “free” formulas simply use different chemical compounds. Chemists say they can’t be sure if the “free” products create a potentially hazardous gas or not when heated, unless they test the surrounding air during use.

Nine years ago, QOD Cosmetic, a dominant cosmetic firm in Brazil, was one of the first companies to create a professionally produced Brazilian keratin product. According to Niko Johnson, CEO of San Francisco-based QOD USA, under EU and international labeling standards, his brand could claim to be “free,” but doesn’t.

“It’s not that complicated to get other compounds to transform into formaldehyde,” says Johnson. “They convert when you flatiron the hair. Any Brazilian-style keratin treatment product sold to stylists should require identical protocols and precautions, whether it’s called ‘free’ or not.”

According to Johnson, all currently marketed Brazilian-type keratin treatments either:

1.Use formalin.
2.Use a compound that reacts in a similar manner when heated (this includes his brands).
3.Contain keratin and incorporates flatironing, but has no chemicals similar to formalin, thus doesn’t last very long.
The lesson? Know which of the three types you have, because there can be huge differences in results and effects.

Over the past several months, I’ve been using Surface Hair Care products as part of my daily routine. With color-treated hair (yes, I’m going gray beneath the blond), my locks sometimes get dry and brittle. The two varieties of Surface products I’ve tried are gentle on my hair and help keep it feeling soft and healthy.

Initially, a stylist friend (Carolyn at Carolyn’s Place, Studio 101, Coralville, Iowa) introduced me to the Trinity line of Surface products. She knows that I’m concerned both about the planet and my own health. Carolyn’s business partner had recently been to a Surface product training in Florida and was excited about how environmentally respectful and people-friendly the products are.

Trinity
So I bought some of the products from Carolyn’s Place — they’re exclusively available at select salons. I’ve used the Trinity Strengthening Shampoo and Strengthening Conditioner for at least two months. The shampoo comes in a 10 oz. bottle, and the conditioner in a 6 oz. bottle. Not surprisingly, with my slightly longer than shoulder-length hair, the shampoo outlasted the conditioner.

Anyone who knows me well knows that I’m not a fan of scented products. Yet, I found Surface’s Trinity products to have a light floral scent that was quite pleasant during my shower. If the scent lingered after my hair was dry, I haven’t noticed (but Joe has complimented it).

I especially like the feel of the shampoo and conditioner when I’m using them. And my hair is both manageable and soft when dry.

Baba
A few days ago, Carolyn recommended that I try the Baba line of Surface products. Baba is a hydrating product, as opposed to a strengthening product, like the Trinity line.

The Baba line includes a Hydrating Masque treatment that is more intensive than the Hydrating Conditioner. Per the directions, I’ve tried the basic method of using it after shampooing and leaving it on for one minute (though I left it a little longer) before rinsing out. The results were on par with simply using the regular Baba Hydrating Conditioner.

The next time, I’ll do as the label suggests for the Maximum Treatment: “Massage into damp hair. Dry into the hair with a hot dryer and rinse.” That’s not very convenient for someone who washes her hair in the shower, but if it makes my hair healthier, it’ll be worth the effort.

Certified Organic, Vegan, and More
Today, I called the Surface Hair Care corporate office in Saskatoon, Saskatchewan, Canada to find out more. I learned that Surface Hair Care is a family business, and though its headquarters are in Canada, Surface produces and distributes their products in the U.S. I spoke with Becca Grund, daughter-in-law of the founder, Wayne Grund. Becca later sent me the following information:

Becca told me that several people with celiac disease have been excited to learn that Surface is a gluten-free product.

“Why is being gluten free important?” I wanted to know. The people I know with celiac disease are concerned about what goes into their digestive system. I haven’t heard of anyone being worried about shampooing with a product that contains gluten.

“I was surprised, too,” Becca said. “But we’ve had a surprisingly large number of people with celiac disease tell us that they’re so relieved to finally find a shampoo and conditioner that they can use. One woman who works for us has celiac disease. She says she thought she was going to have to give up styling hair because of the reaction she had to other products containing gluten. Now, she uses Surface with no problem.”

EWG Skin Deep Cosmetic Database
Whenever I consider trying a new personal-care product, I instantly check with the Environmental Working Group (EWG) Skin Deep Cosmetic Safety Database. The EWG Skin Deep hazard scale ranks products with Low (0-2), Medium (3-6), and High (7-10) risk factors. The lower the score, the safer the product.

Because Surface is so new (they launched in 2008), their products haven’t yet been evaluated by EWG scientists. However, most of the main ingredients are found in other products and have been evaluated on the Skin Deep Cosmetics Database. Following are the ratings for the ingredients in Trinity Shampoo. (I know it’s anal for me to go to this detail, but aren’t you glad I did it so you wouldn’t have to?)

Considering that the ingredients are listed in order by quantity, I’m comforted that the majority were low risk, and with the next largest group being moderate risk. Of course, I’d prefer no risk at all, but I haven’t yet found a salon product that fits that criteria.

There’s one more thing I like about Surface. According to Becca Grund, “Surface Donates 10% Of All Net Profit To Sponsoring Children Through World Vision.” My guess is, some of those funds — possibly including 10% of what they earned from my purchases — are working in Haiti right now.

SULFATE FREE
Surface achieves gentle yet thorough cleansing by formulating with Palm and Coconut Oils. As a bonus, strengthening qualities are achieved by covalently (permanently) bonding fatty acids of the oils to vegetable protein. The result is shampoo with thorough gentle cleansing and a luxurious „velvet‟ lather. Vegan proteins, botanical moisturizers and Color Lock Vita Complex make the cleansing process reparative and color locking as well as cleansing. Surface products are free of Sodium Laureth Sulfate and Sodium Laurel Sulfate. For years Sodium Laureth Sulfate and Sodium Laurel Sulfate have been widely used surface active agents (cleanser) in shampoos. PARABEN AND FORMALDEHYDE FREE

Wrong Color

You've gone with a permanent color or ammonia base a but it may not be what you pictured or your not sold on the results. Color can be a big change you may wait a few days before passing judgement. If it was done at a salon, any good professional salon will be happy to adjust it if you're not completely satisfied.
If you just can't live with it at all, a stylist can use a color remover to lighten your hair, but you run the risk of further damage and a brassy look and you'll probably have to color it yet again. If you've used a gentle demipermanent color, most of it will eventually wash out. Use a clarifying shampoo to speed the fade process.
Too-Light Color

If you've had your hair lightened and decided platinum is not you, go back to your stylist and they can apply a toner to get the shade you desire.
Your salon professional will be happy to tone your color if you're not satisfied at no charge within a reasonable time.
If a permanent color was used to lighten only a little and still want it darker, use a demipermanent until time for a retouch.
Occasionally, hair is so damaged that it just can't absorb color. In that case, your only recourse is to either have the damage cut off or wait for healthier hair to grow in. If you've had permanent color and you just can't live with it, a colorist can use a color remover to lighten your hair by adding highlights.. If you've used a gentle demipermanent, try a clarifying shampoo to help remove some color..
To keep your hair from getting too dark when coloring a deep conditioning before you color also can help. Color builds up, too even demipermanents.
Brassy Color
If you've had your hair lightned only a couple of shades with a permanent color, try a blue-toned shampoo, which is formulated especially for this problem, or have your colorist apply a blue or violet toner to counteract the redness.
For a more serious case, you can use a gentle, ashy demipermanent in a similar shade to tone it down. To prevent this from happening in the future, choose an cool shade, use a mild shampoo and limit your hair's exposure to the sun. If you've lightened significantly, it's possible that the product was not on long enough.Some hair particularly if it's naturally very dark, can be rather resistant to bleaching. Microdermabrasion is the mechanical exfoliation or sandblasting by aluminum oxide crystals that gets rid of the top layer of skin to the face, chest, or hands. Microdermabrasion is sometimes known as a derma-peel, power peel, and has even called a lunchtime peel since there is no downtime for the skin to recover. It can considerably clean your pores and can delay future breakouts if the procedure is done on a regular basis.{3-6 weeks}
The procedure is fairly quick, only lasting about thirty minutes a session. Before the procedure begins, a cleanser is applied to the skin to get rid of any excessive oil and to help the microdermabrasion penetrate deeply. A wand is manually passed over the skin, either along the problem areas or over the whole face. The machine releases tiny aluminum oxide crystals that remove dead skin. After the procedure is over, a cotton ball with a mild toner is run over the face to help soothe the skin. A re-hydrating cream and sun block are applied following the procedure.
After the procedure you will notice an immediate result, but there are a few things to be expected. Your skin will look a little pinkish, like you've had a sunburn or windburn, and the skin around your eyes will feel a little tingly. Your skin may peel and feel very dry, but know this is natural and part of the process. For the first few days, you will need to use a good moisturizer and sun block. You will also need to stay out of any ultraviolet lights (sunlight or tanning beds) for longer periods of time. Do not use any abrasive exfoliating scrubs or lotions before the procedure and at least three days after the procedure.
Since the microdermabrasion procedure takes away the top layer of skin, it's really beneficial for people who have acne or acne scars, uneven textured skin, sun damaged skin, large pores, or the dreaded stretch marks. Microderabrasion will not get rid of deep scars, birthmarks, or tattoos.
Microdermabrasion works the best when a series of treatments are performed, generally every seven to ten days.{For severe problem skin ie achne} After a series of treatments, you'll notice the oiliness on your face has decreased, your pores have gotten smaller, and your skin appears healthier and younger. If you are like anyone else, you love to wash your hair at least every other day of not daily. As you lather up you can help but love the feeling of all those bubbles but did you know that the very ingredients that give you that amazing lather may also be the most damaging to your hair?

sulfate free shampoo
Most mainstream shampoos contain sulfates which is great for making lots of lather but not so great for your personal health, your hairs health and even the environments health.
So why are the mainstream companies still using sulfates in their brands of shampoos?
For the most part it is because sulfates are cheap to make and create lots of lather. Being that we are all have become accustom to the idea that lots of bubbles means really clean hair they keep making cheap shampoo’s.
Just what are sulfates and why are they an issue? You will find the in the shampoo’s ingredient listed as sodium laureth sulfate (SLES) and sodium lauryl sulfate (SLS) which are in fact really a harsh chemical surfactants that are found in lots of other products including toothpaste. They are known to cause eye and skin irritation plus when you use shampoo that contains these ingredients they can be absorbed through the skin.
Did you know that sulfates are really far from being gentle and can be causing damage on the very thing you are trying to pamper? Yes your hair!
