Surface Color Lock Vita Complex
Ceramide and Vitamin A, C, E Antioxidant Complex
Help Prevent Color Fading and Seal Color into Hair
Challenges of long lasting color begin with the health of the hair and it’s ability to hold color. Once the color is deposited, preventing oxidization (break down and fading) is the next concern. Hair color is continuously challenged by the environment and UV rays. Cleansing the hair thoroughly yet gently is another must for color preservation.

Surface and the Color Lock Vita Complex
Shampoo, conditioner, reconstructor and styling product all play a role in maximizing the health of hair and ultimately long lasting, vibrant color. That is why it is important to formulate ALL hair care products with color locking properties as a top priority. Surface products all contain the Color Lock Vita Complex:
Retinyl Palmitate (Vitamin A) – Antioxidant. Protects from free radicals. Anti-aging.
Ascorbic Acid (Vitamin C) – Antioxidant. Primary prevention of the oxidation of color.
Tocopheryl Acetate (Vitamin E) – Antioxidant. Protects cells from free radicals and oxidative damage. Anti-aging properties. Provides UV protection.
Ceramide 3 Lipids - Restores damaged hair, protects hair against chemical and UV damage
Color Lock Vita Complex helps lock color into and onto the hair by playing an essential role helping to eliminate the free radicals following color services and preventing the oxidation (break down) of the color molecule. Anti-aging properties encourage cellular renewal. Ceramide 3 reinforces the natural lipid barrier strengthening, and protecting the hair against chemical and UV damage. Surface shampoos are sulfate free. Surface shampoos cleanse thorough yet gently with natural Palm and Coconut Oil Surfactants.

Fall/winter hair care tips 2009 Reflections of You Fairfax salon and spa

Fall/Winter hair 2009 Beat the weather dry damaged hair prevention. Reflections of You Fairfax salon and spa
Fall is here and that means cold weather, wind and dry stuffy rooms which all lead to dry frizzy hair that is hard to manage and breaks. There are two things you can do to fend off the fall weather, to prevent and protect your hair, skin and face. Doing these things can help, but doing both is what is going to keep your hair and skin healthy and shiny all winter long.
Prevention is the Key
One of the ways to stop dry hair is to use a thick moisturizing shampoo and conditioner, this is going to hydrate the hair and scalp by coating it in a thin moisture layer while locking in water and protecting against harmful elements. Use a quality shampoo and conditioner like BABA from Surface{ http://www.surfacehair.com/main.aspx }which is a vegan product line with essential oils needed to hydrate not only the hair but scalp also. Another simply amazing product is the BABA hydrating oil I use this not only in my hair but as a face moisturizer works great without the greasy residue, because it does not have mineral oil so it actually penetrates the skin. BABA hydrating mask is an incredible moisturizer for the hair and scalp simply apply to dry hair work it in slowly while adding water with a spray bottle then blow dry into hair fusing this product and locking in the product. This treatment will last 3-4 weeks. http://www.roysalon.com/

Reflections of You Fairfax introduces a new line Surface {Green product line}

[Surface, What‟s In and What‟s Out of Our Products?] Great Hair! While Respecting Health & Earth.
SULFATE FREE
Surface achieves gentle yet thorough cleansing by formulating with Palm and Coconut Oils. As a bonus, strengthening qualities are achieved by covalently (permanently) bonding fatty acids of the oils to vegetable protein. The result is shampoo with thorough gentle cleansing and a luxurious „velvet‟ lather. Vegan proteins, botanical moisturizers and Color Lock Vita Complex make the cleansing process reparative and color locking as well as cleansing. Surface products are free of Sodium Laureth Sulfate and Sodium Laurel Sulfate. For years Sodium Laureth Sulfate and Sodium Laurel Sulfate have been widely used surface active agents (cleanser) in shampoos. They are also used in cleansers from dish soap to garage floor cleansers. They have good deep cleansing properties and provide a „bubbly suds‟. The stronger the cleanser the greater the chance to dry out the skin and hair, fade color and cause irritation.
PARABEN AND FORMALDEHYDE FREE
Hair care products must be safe for use. Shampoo, conditioners, and styling products containing water and without an ingredient to prevent microbial growth, will go „bad‟ and may even grow potentially pathogenic organisms. To control microbial growth and to stabilize any cosmetic product a preservative needs to be used. The choice of preservative is very important. Parabens are effective, relatively inexpensive preservatives. They do however come with increasingly controversial health concerns but are continued to be used by many companies.
Surface chooses to use only naturally derived preservatives, while considerably more expensive, "doing what is right is the only option". Surface uses a globally approved naturally derived preservative commonly known as Rose ether. Rose ether is produced by fermenting plant sugars. Another Surface preservative is a food grade preservative Sorbic Acid. Sorbic acid is derived from fruit.
PETROCHEMICAL PVP FREE
Naturally derived sugars and corn starch are proving to be superior natural resins for styling products! They provide strong, flexible hold and anti frizz properties and in high humidity these natural resins show exceptional style retention. Sugar and corn starch are NOT plastic derivatives and are easily shampooed off. Surface does NOT use petroleum, not only is it non-renewable, it carries with it possible health issues. A common hair care styling resin derived from petroleum is PVP (poly vinyl pyrrolidone). PVP is considered hazardous by OSHA Communication Standards (29CFR 1910:1200). It can be particularly harmful if inhaled, which is a problem because of its use in styling products such as hair sprays.
MINERAL OIL FREE
Mineral oil is a petroleum derivative and is often used as a softening or moisturizing agent. When you have mineral oil on your skin and hair, nothing goes in and nothing can get out. Mineral oil forms a barrier which does not allow toxins to be eliminated or beneficial proteins, moisture and antioxidants to penetrate.  Surface, What‟ In and What‟ Out of Our Products?  Page 3
Surface chooses a natural alternative in organic Babassu seed oil, which is a non-drying penetrating oil that is high in lauric and myristic acids, they have a melting point that is close to the human body temperature so, when applied, Babassu oil draws heat from the skin to initiate melting (penetration). Babassu oil is considered a superior emollient that is beneficial for either dry or oily skin and hair. It gently moisturizes without leaving an oily sheen or weight. Palm, Aloe, Flax and Safflower seed oil are complimentary to Babassu.
ANIMAL AND WHEAT PROTEIN FREE
Surface believes being free of animal protein is simply the right thing to do. With the continued environmental stress surrounding us there have been a growing number of rashes and allergies. One of the causes is Gluten, which is Wheat Protein. Surface is free of wheat and maximizes hair strength and repair with pure vegan protein of Amaranth, Keravis and Soy!
DEA AND TEA FREE
Diethanolamine (DEA) and Triethanolamine (TEA), long used in industrial strength lubricants, surfactants and foaming agents are potential irritants. Surface has replaced these chemicals with ingredients derived from organic Palm and Babassu oil.
Synthetic Fragrance and Color
Surface products are formulated only with plant-derived aromas. The color of all Surface products is from the natural color of the product‟ ingredients.

Corrective hair color Fairfax Va.

What to do for hair color correction. Reflections of You Fairfax Salon and Spa roysalon.com
Wrong Color
You've gone with a permanent color or ammonia base a but it may not be what you pictured or your not sold on the results. Color can be a big change you may wait a few days before passing judgement. If it was done at a salon, any good professional salon will be happy to adjust it if you're not completely satisfied.
If you just can't live with it at all, a stylist can use a color remover to lighten your hair, but you run the risk of further damage and a brassy look and you'll probably have to color it yet again. If you've used a gentle demipermanent color, most of it will eventually wash out. Use a clarifying shampoo to speed the fade process.
Too-Light Color
If you've had your hair lightened and decided platinum is not you, go back to your stylist and they can apply a toner to get the shade you desire.
Your salon professional will be happy to tone your color if you're not satisfied at no charge within a reasonable time.
If a permanent color was used to lighten only a little and still want it darker, use a demipermanent until time for a retouch.
Occasionally, hair is so damaged that it just can't absorb color. In that case, your only recourse is to either have the damage cut off or wait for healthier hair to grow in. We provide deep hair conditioning treatments to help repair hair a few treatments may be needed to repair your hair. [Great treatment using products from Surface] You can do it yourself at home with proper instructions and product.
Dull Color
For a serious case of the dulls, consider a color gloss. And highlights or lowlights can bring back that shine. One other thing to consider is an oil treatment to your hair like Baba from surface. http://www.surfacehair.com/main.aspx
Too-Dark Color
During the first few days after color hair usually fades especially after a few shampoos this is more noticeable on coarse and damaged hair. Hair that is in need of hydration/conditioner
If you've had permanent color and you just can't live with it, a colorist can use a color remover to lighten your hair by adding highlights.. If you've used a gentle demipermanent, try a clarifying shampoo to help remove some color..
To keep your hair from getting too dark when coloring a deep conditioning before you color also can help. Color builds up, too even demipermanents.
Brassy Color
If you've had your hair lightned only a couple of shades with a permanent color, try a blue-toned shampoo, which is formulated especially for this problem, or have your colorist apply a blue or violet toner to counteract the redness.
For a more serious case, you can use a gentle, ashy demipermanent in a similar shade to tone it down. To prevent this from happening in the future, choose an cool shade, use a mild shampoo and limit your hair's exposure to the sun. If you've lightened significantly, it's possible that the product was not on long enough. Some hair particularly if it's naturally very dark, can be rather resistant to bleaching. Your best bet is to have a good colorist fix this problem for you. By Anita Zaatar Hair designer colorist at Reflections of You Fairfax

Microdermabrasion facts Reflections of You Fairfax

Microdermabrasion is the mechanical exfoliation or sandblasting by aluminum oxide crystals that gets rid of the top layer of skin to the face, chest, or hands. Microdermabrasion is sometimes known as a derma-peel, power peel, and has even called a lunchtime peel since there is no downtime for the skin to recover. It can considerably clean your pores and can delay future breakouts if the procedure is done on a regular basis.{3-6 weeks}
The procedure is fairly quick, only lasting about thirty minutes a session. Before the procedure begins, a cleanser is applied to the skin to get rid of any excessive oil and to help the microdermabrasion penetrate deeply. A wand is manually passed over the skin, either along the problem areas or over the whole face. The machine releases tiny aluminum oxide crystals that remove dead skin. After the procedure is over, a cotton ball with a mild toner is run over the face to help soothe the skin. A re-hydrating cream and sun block are applied following the procedure.
After the procedure you will notice an immediate result, but there are a few things to be expected. Your skin will look a little pinkish, like you've had a sunburn or windburn, and the skin around your eyes will feel a little tingly. Your skin may peel and feel very dry, but know this is natural and part of the process. For the first few days, you will need to use a good moisturizer and sun block. You will also need to stay out of any ultraviolet lights (sunlight or tanning beds) for longer periods of time. Do not use any abrasive exfoliating scrubs or lotions before the procedure and at least three days after the procedure.
Since the microdermabrasion procedure takes away the top layer of skin, it's really beneficial for people who have acne or acne scars, uneven textured skin, sun damaged skin, large pores, or the dreaded stretch marks. Microderabrasion will not get rid of deep scars, birthmarks, or tattoos.
Microdermabrasion works the best when a series of treatments are performed, generally every seven to ten days.{For severe problem skin ie achne} After a series of treatments, you'll notice the oiliness on your face has decreased, your pores have gotten smaller, and your skin appears healthier and younger. Pricing for microdermabrasions can cost anywhere from $35-$150 for each procedure. http://roysalon.com/spa/skincare.htm

Beauty without parabens Fairfax Va. Salon and Spa

Northern Va. salon Reflections of You Fairfax salon and spa cares about you and your health.

What are Parabens?
Parabens are substances that are often used as preservatives in cosmetics, personal care products and skin care products. Some of the major parabens are benzylparaben, butylparaben, ethylparaben, isobutylparaben, methylparaben, and propylparaben. They are petroleum-based chemicals that prevent the growth of bacteria, and have been used for a long time in skin care and personal care products.
Often two or more parabens are combined together in a product formulation to extend the shelf life of a product.
Dangers of Parabens
Parabens are of particular concern for a number of reasons. They have been shown to cause allergic reactions and are one of the leading causes of contact dermatitis.
In addition, they mimic estrogen in the body which disrupts the delicate hormonal balance that our bodies need for good health. This is especially of concern for adolescents and pregnant women. There is some concern that parabens affect the development of the fetus and also affect a male fetus' future fertility.
Parabens have also been linked to organ system toxicity, cancer, and neurological and developmental disorders.
If that isn't bad enough, research has found parabens present as contaminants in tap water, food, and even built up in our bodies!
Reflections of You Fairfax carry brands from several manufacturers that are paraben free.{Surface, Kevin Murphy} Visit us at roysalon.com Although these products may cost a little more your health is worth every penny.

Healthy hair cost more. Reflections of You Fairfax salon and spa

If you are like anyone else, you love to wash your hair at least every other day of not daily. As you lather up you can help but love the feeling of all those bubbles but did you know that the very ingredients that give you that amazing lather may also be the most damaging to your hair?

sulfate free shampoo
Most mainstream shampoos contain sulfates which is great for making lots of lather but not so great for your personal health, your hairs health and even the environments health.
So why are the mainstream companies still using sulfates in their brands of shampoos?
For the most part it is because sulfates are cheap to make and create lots of lather. Being that we are all have become accustom to the idea that lots of bubbles means really clean hair they keep making cheap shampoo’s.
Just what are sulfates and why are they an issue? You will find the in the shampoo’s ingredient listed as sodium laureth sulfate (SLES) and sodium lauryl sulfate (SLS) which are in fact really a harsh chemical surfactants that are found in lots of other products including toothpaste. They are known to cause eye and skin irritation plus when you use shampoo that contains these ingredients they can be absorbed through the skin.
Did you know that sulfates are really far from being gentle and can be causing damage on the very thing you are trying to pamper? Yes your hair! Sulfates are very drying and can damage hair follicles which could lead to hair loss. All because we really enjoy our amazing lather while washing our hair. It can also strip the hair and scalp of essential oils causing that drying effect. Worse if you are spending lots of money to color your hair, it causes the color to fade quicker so you have to get your hair colored more often.
If you want to change your brand of shampoo and start looking into more natural and or organic shampoos but don’t know what to look for? Here are a few tips on what to look for while reading the shampoo bottle label.
Look for ingredients such as gylcerine and glucosides that come naturally from corn and sugar. Usually found on the label as decyl glucodisde or coco-glucoside. These ingredients won’t give you that lots of lather you maybe accustom to but try it for a few weeks and your hair will become healthier, shinier, silkier and softer. Now isn’t that a great trade off?
One finally thought, sulfate free shampoo's; are going to cost a bit more than your mainstream shampoos do because of their ingredients. So don’t be surprised at that, but you will in fact use less to cleanse your hair and your hair will be better over all. Isn’t that worth a extra few dollars at the counter? Your hair will love you for it!

Massage relieves stress and pain

Massage: A relaxing method to relieve stress and pain
A soothing massage can help you unwind, but that's not all. Explore the health benefits and risks of massage therapy, plus what to expect.By Mayo Clinic staff
You might think of a massage only as a luxury in exotic spas and upscale health clubs. But did you know that massage therapy, when combined with traditional medical treatments, is used to reduce stress and pain and promote healing in people with certain health conditions?
What is massage therapy?
During a massage, a therapist manipulates your body's soft tissues — your muscles, skin and tendons — using his or her fingertips, hands and fists. Massage can be performed by several types of health care professionals, such as a physical therapist, occupational therapist or massage therapist. Several versions of massage exist, and they're performed in a variety of settings.
A massage may make you feel relaxed, but it isn't likely to cure everything that ails you. And, if performed incorrectly, it could hurt you. Learning about massage before you try one can help ensure that the experience is safe and enjoyable.
Why it's done
Massage can relieve tension in your muscles, and most people use it for relaxation, relief of stress and anxiety, or to reduce muscle soreness. Massage can also cause your body to release natural painkillers, and it may boost your immune system.

How does your sunsreen match up.

Does your sunscreen work? Surprisingly, 3 of 5 brand-name sunscreens either don’t protect skin from sun damage or contain hazardous chemicals — or both. An Environmental Working Group investigation of 1,620 sunscreens rates the season’s best — and worst.
Some companies have responded to EWG’s 3-year campaign for safer, more effective sunscreens. 70% of sunscreen products now contain strong UVA filters, compared to 29% last year. The bad news: much UVA protection is still too thin to save your skin. Don't waste your money or risk your skin on sunscreens that don’t deliver. Use our 2009 Sunscreen Guide to find better products.http://www.ewg.org/whichsunscreensarebest/2009report

Finding the right salon is not easy. Hair salon Fairfax Va.

Finding the right salon and spa 101

Cleanliness: Salon floors get littered with freshly cut hair all the time, but if you notice clumps of hair around a chair that wasn’t recently in use, that’s a bad sign. The hairstylists’ stations should be free of clutter and the styling tools and products you see should look clean and new. At Reflections of You Fairfax you be blown away with the cleanliness and pride you sense during your visit.
Pricing: While a great deal is always tempting, hair salons with cheap prices may be setting them so low because they can’t compete with other nearby salons in either skill or service. On the other hand, high prices don’t necessarily mean high quality – the salon may be inflating their rates to create the look of prestige. Reflections of You Fairfax prices are excellent for the quality of service and the hyper trained staffs ability to give you the look you desire.Location: Hair salons in malls are busy places, frequently trafficked by walk-ins and passers-by in need of a quick trim. As such, they may not provide the attentive service that you deserve. At Reflections of You Fairfax we appreciate your business our stylist are known for being on time and providing exceptional; service with amazing results that is why we can offer a 100% Money back Guarantee on all services in print we don’t mumble this under our breath.

Services: A hair salon that can offer extensions, straightening treatments and other high-end professional services is often a sign of hairstylists who are up to date on the latest trends and technology in hair care. Unrelated services like manicures, pedicures and waxing are a great bonus, as long as it’s clear that hairstyling is the salon’s primary focus. Reflections of You Fairfax offers the latest in hair styling our service providers are kept up to date with both in house and away training. Our stylist are all trained on the product lines we use and retail. Like I said earlier come in for your first visit and if you are not totally delighted the service is FREE.
Customer Service: The most telling sign of salon quality is how much their employees seem to care. This applies not only to your hairstylist, but the other stylists and employees as well. Stop in or call that will say it all. Stop in and see our proudly posted employee of the month plaque we place at the front desk to show you the customer that we really care about not only you but we reward our staff for superior customer service. The first time you visit, your stylist should ask you several questions about what lengths, styles and colors you like for your hair and make suggestions on what she feels will suit you best. You should feel comfortable telling her what you want and if you’re displeased with your previous cut. Our stylist consult with you to see exactly what you challenges are and make suggestions to correct these concerns. We will follow up on each visit to be sure everything meets your expectations.

IS clinical skincare products work!!!!!!!!!

I am starting an intense regime as I slowly push my way to the "4th" floor of life. I discovered IS skincare a couple of weeks ago and started using its C Eye Advanced Serum, Eye Complex and Super Serum Advance for pigmentation issues. All I have to say is OH MY GOD. Why have I not heard of this before? After requesting the press package I was shocked to find that it has been featured in almost every magazine available on a list of celebs that reads like Vanity Fair's Oscar party (actually this is the line celebs turn to for last minute firming, brightening and moisturizing before red carpet events!). Another noteworthy fact is that IS works with Washington Cancer Institute in Washington DC-- they have developed innovative products that address the unique skincare concerns of cancer patients. Many of these formulas not only help create vibrant and healthy skin, they also address important issues such as acne, chafing, uneven complexion, burns and scar tissue. Bridal do's and don"ts

Every bride wants to look and feel like she is Cinderella on her special day. Your wedding will be a very special opportunity to celebrate your total beauty. It is important that you are well prepared so that you will truly sparkle with a special new radiance that day. Take advantage of all the professional salon, spa and beauty care services that are available. You'll also want to look your best, so your friends, photographer and videographer can capture the day with captivating memories and beautiful photographs.
Beauty Dos:
Just like looking for the best location, caterers, hotels, florists and cakes, you need to properly plan your bridal beauty care for yourself and your entire wedding party.
Start your wedding beauty care research and plans six or more months in advance.
Take the time to find a salon that specializes in bridal beauty care services.
Investigate the various hair, skin, nail, makeup, spa, body wraps and body treatment services that are available.
Explore plenty of options for your bridal hairstyle. Take in several photographs of hair designs that you like, so your hair designer can try these looks on for you.
Plan to sign up for a bridal beauty care package and pay for it in advance, so you will have one less thing to worry about as the wedding date draws closer.
Create a special checklist with your professional salon consultants, so everything is well planned for your complete and total image.
Plan hair and makeup trial sessions for yourself and your mom. No one else will require a trial beauty care session. If necessary, take your veil.
Determine if you will need to grow, condition, color or texture your hair. You should always look natural at your wedding, yet you can determine if you will need hair extensions to give you a fully up style hair design with longer hair and hair color accents.
Plan to share your dress design with your hair stylists and makeup artists, so they can start to plan your bridal hair and makeup image.
Be sure to explore as many hair design options as possible.
Have your hair designer add a small beautiful hair color accent with special hair extension pieces that will match the color of your bridesmaid's dresses.
It is important to keep your entire wedding party organized and together at one salon. This will help everyone to get to know each other better, so everyone is relaxed and has more fun at your ceremony and party.
You will want your face and skin to have a natural glow and be in the best possible condition. Remember to get your skin in shape.
You will certainly need to start a regular regimen of monthly facials, skincare and body treatments to look healthy. This is very important, so that when your bridal makeup is applied, your skin will not have the challenges of dehydration, acne, flakiness, uneven skin tones or breakouts.
Ask your salon and spa esthetician to recommend a professional homecare regimen of skincare products.
Enhance your total body and image with facials, cellulite treatments, mud treatments, infrared treatments, saunas, back facials and body wraps.
Ask for complimentary skincare analysis.
Explore microdermabrasion, microcurrent treatments, oxygen facials and hydrotherapy treatment facials.
Now is the time to upgrade from a simple manicure to a spa manicure and pedicure that include extra hand and foot conditioning treatments as well as the paraffin treatments.
Test your manicurists with French Tips, a special color, nail art or whatever you plan to use at least once before the big day.
Have your nails done the day before the wedding. Your hands will need to look great with everyone staring at your rings.
Beauty Don'ts
Don't do anything drastic! Do not plan to make a dramatic last minute hair cut or hair color change.
Avoid trying to look like a Hollywood celebrity.
Do not wait for a single last minute facial, as you may breakout or have an acne reaction that will be difficult to cover with makeup.
Don't ask your best friend to do your makeup. Use a professional who is an expert at bridal and photography makeup services. There is a big difference in makeup artists.
Avoid a makeup artist that normally applies commercial daytime makeup at a department store cosmetic counter, while their normal job is to sell you makeup.
Avoid big dark smoky eyes if you do not normally wear them.
Avoid last minute tanning sessions and spray-on sunless tanning services, if you do not regularly do them. You will need to avoid an unnatural look. You certainly don't want anything extra to rub off on your wedding dress.
Avoid coming to the salon the morning of your wedding hung over from a bachelorette party.

2009 summer hair trends
Thursday, December 11, 2008
Thursday, December 11, 2008
To find out what crops make the cut this season, we spoke with Shukeel Murtaza of Barney Martin. Here's what's hot in hair for summer.
1. Oh boyThanks to Agney Deyn, the androgynous look is still in full swing. Short hair with long fringes were everywhere on the international catwalks. "It works well on delicate features and long necks and is very versatile," says Shukeel. Think Katie Holmes' casual new cut: it's the fringe that frames the look. "Wear it down, pinned up in a quiff or just messed up with a little paste."
Related link: Get the crop
2. Short and sharpSince Victoria Beckham's distinct Pob made front pages last year, the bob has taken to the street by storm — and it's still a coveted catwalk look. "All kinds of bobs are still hot: short and long, textured or messy," says Shukeel. "Bobs suit any occasion and frame the face and jaw line." For a sleek look, straighten hair with a hot iron and finish with a shine spray. For more casual occasions, work a paste through the hair to add texture.
Related link: Short, sharp, structured hair
3. It's getting messyFor those addicted to their long locks, heave a sigh of relief: summer's carefree, feminine look is low maintenance. "Long hair is a little messier and more textured this season," says Shukeel. "A fringe is the key to this look — it frames the face, eyes and cheekbones." For the perfect "undone" do, apply mousse to the mid-lengths and ends, flip your hair over your head and blast with a hair dryer. Iron the fringe to keep it sleek.

4. Curly questionLong, luscious curls are also hot. "They should be worn soft and messy. Just think sexy beach hair, tousled and wavy." Use large tongs to create a casual curl through the mid-lengths to the ends, then tip your head upside down and give your locks a good shake. Finish with sea-salt spray for added texture.
Related link: Gorgeous curls, minus the frizz
5. Up, up, and awayPonytails aren't just for bad hair days — they can add instant elegance. Give the classic ponytail a modern twist by backcombing the fringe off the face. "This is such a great way to open up your face. It's simple, really easy to do and yet very elegant." Once you've backcombed, smooth the quiff with a brush and pin into place.

How often should you have a facial?

Anitra's Spas Blog
By Anitra Brown, About.com Guide to Spas since 2004

How Often Should You Get a Facial?
Friday April 6, 2007
The other day a woman came to see me with extremely dry, reddened skin. It turned out she had spent a fortune in products that weren't right for her, and was getting facials every two weeks. "Why are you getting facials every two weeks?" I asked her. "That's what my esthetician says I need," she replied. I was appalled. Here was a woman trying to do the right thing, and her esthetician was being totally unethical. She was having her come in too often, just to make some money off her. So how often should you have a facial?
Well, it depends. If you have acne or a lot of blackheads or whiteheads that need to be cleared out, then once every week or two is not too much until your skin has improved. Once you're in maintenance mode, every four to six weeks is ideal.
The most important thing for this woman, who was over-exfoliating, was get on the right products to soothe and calm her skin. She also needed to find a new esthetician who was more concerned about her well-being than just making a quick buck.

Testimonials
When I want the best, I go to the best. The ambiance and service at Reflections Fairfax is top notch. It's more than a hairdo... it's an experience. From the massaging at the sink to the brushing of my hair. I leave loving the new reflections of me! Stacy Gurdon

I have followed Heather and her team to ROY and Heather (specifically) for a number of years. She has truly mastered the art of color that is natural and flattering to my skin tone, time of year and texture of my hair. I am rarely concerned about how it will turn out and trust her judgment about what will work for "me". I am not one who is prone to make extreme changes and she is sensitive to that, often making recommendations for subtle shifts that help me keep my hair in the most healthy condition and in a style that works for my personality and career. She is also a wonderful teacher; continuously educating her clients on new products and approaches that surface in the industry that we can use ourselves. Cathie MurenskyLeesburg, VA

Prior to finding Heather and Reflections of You Fairfax, I usually felt quite a bit of trepidation before any hair appointment. In the past, I was never certain that my needs were of importance to the person wielding the scissors behind my head. I heard rumors about stylists who were good at their jobs and actually listened to their customers, but did not believe them to be true. My visits to Reflections of You Fairfax have really opened my eyes to how pleasant the salon experience can be. I am never worried when I take a seat in Heather's chair as I am sure that all of my questions and concerns will be professionally addressed. Every member of the staff is courteous and kind, the environment is relaxing, and the products used are excellent. I would not hesitate to recommend the salon to a friend. Erika R.Fairfax, VA

I want to commend Anita Zaatar on the wonderful person she is. My sister had a debilitating stroke and she was so kind and patient with her. She did an excellent job on her hair and made her feel so good about herself, that my sister applied makeup with her one good hand. You are very fortunate to have Anita on staff. Sherry Berks
I have recently had a 90 minute therapeutic massage at the salon. I literally felt like I was floating on a cloud and found myself staggering out the front door! It was truly a dream come true. I also had a European facial and loved it. I am not sure if you are still offering this service any longer but it was thorough, relaxing, and I felt pampered with my skin feeling like baby's skin after it was completed. After the facial I asked my husband for a gift certificate for my birthday so I look forward to continued treatments. Here is a picture of me looking relaxed after my wonderful massage and facial :-) Debbie Holmes

Youthful skin. Reflections of You Fairfax salon and spa What keeps our skin from sagging?

Skincare-news.com team writes.
Sagging and wrinkling is a natural part of aging, largely caused by collagen and elastin loss. Find out how they work and how to boost their production, so skin looks young and firm.

What are collagen and elastin?

Collagen and elastin are proteins found in the dermis, a layer of skin just below the epidermis (the top layer of skin visible to us). Special cells called fibroblasts produce both proteins.

Working in tandem, collagen and elastin provide the foundation for skin. Collagen cushions and supports the epidermis, preventing it from collapsing on the muscles and bones, while elastin allows skin to stretch and flex smoothly.

Also, both proteins are excellent water binders, keeping skin supple and hydrated. When skin has sufficient hydration, it stays smooth and unwrinkled.

Why they deteriorate

As collagen and elastin synthesis slows down, the skin starts to sag and thin and develops fine lines and wrinkles. What’s responsible for the breakdown? Blame these three factors.

Age. Young children and babies have soft, plump, healthy skin because their collagen and elastin levels are high. Though different types of collagen are found in different parts of the body, all of them start decreasing around age 35. In fact, “by the age of 60, all types of collagen are significantly below their youthful levels,” writes Dr. G. Todorov of the Web site, Smart SkinCare. Elastin levels reach their high point in your teens or in young adulthood, and then they also start dropping.

Sun exposure. Environmental damage — most notably sun exposure — can hasten collagen and elastin loss. In fact, the sun causes 90 percent of wrinkles and sagging skin, writes Eric F. Bernstein, M.D., professor at the University of Pennsylvania School of Medicine. These effects are cumulative, building up over time and may not show up for many years.

Specifically, sun damage prematurely breaks down collagen and elastin fibers, causing changes to skin tone, texture and density. And it isn’t just outdoor exposure that damages collagen and elastin: Tanning beds also cause these changes, because they use UV lights.

Smoke. Research has shown that smoking leads to premature aging. Specifically, smoking damages both collagen and elastin. For instance, research from the Nagoya City University Medical School in Japan found that smoking contributes to collagen loss when examining cells, reports BBC News. The study showed that smoking:

Increases MMP production. Matrix metalloproteinases (MMP) are responsible for collagen breakdown. According to the study, after exposure to smoke, cells produced much more MMP than cells that weren’t exposed. In fact, other research has shown that smokers have a higher level of MMP than nonsmokers, according to YourTotalHealth.

Decreases new collagen formation. Also, in the study, cells exposed to smoke suffered “a drop in the production of fresh collagen by up to 40 percent,” according to the article.

Slowing down the breakdown

Fortunately, you can prevent some collagen and elastin loss. Here are several steps that can help.

Avoid harmful exposure. The number one way to minimize collagen and elastin damage is to reduce your sun exposure, which means avoiding both outdoor and indoor tanning. Tanning booths are just as harmful — if not more — as tanning outdoors.

Stop smoking. As mentioned above, smoking contributes to both collagen and elastin loss. It’s also been linked to crow’s feet, wrinkles around the mouth and eyes and leathery, sallow skin.

Add effective products. In addition to healthy habits, try products with these ingredients.

Vitamin C. Research suggests that vitamin C encourages collagen production and fights off free-radical damage. However, vitamin C becomes inactive very quickly when exposed to sunlight, heat and air. Buy vitamin C products that come in tightly sealed dark containers and always keep them in a cool place and away from sunlight.

Retinoids. Derivatives of vitamin A, retinoids stimulate collagen production and increase cell turnover rate (which helps reveal younger, smoother skin).

Peptides. These special proteins also promote collagen production, healthy cell function and cell-to-cell communication.

Reconsider collagen creams. Applying a cream that contains collagen doesn’t actually stimulate collagen in the skin. That’s because “collagen molecules are too large to penetrate into the dermis when applied to the surface of the skin,” explains Dr. Todorov. The collagen in skincare products only helps to moisturize the skin.

Finding the right salon is not easy.

How To: Find The Right Hair Salon
By Cailin

The key to avoiding a bad haircut? Going to an experienced hairstylist that makes you feel at ease. But finding a good hair salon (especially after moving to a new area) can be even trickier than finding a great apartment!
I wrote an article for Misikko.com with some tips on what qualities to look for when deciding on a new hair salon. Read on and discover the indicators of a good (or bad) salon:
Cleanliness: Salon floors get littered with freshly cut hair all the time, but if you notice clumps of hair around a chair that wasn’t recently in use, that’s a bad sign. The hairstylists’ stations should be free of clutter and the styling tools and products you see should look clean and new. If you spot any globs of hair products or stains on the counters, you should probably choose a different salon.
Pricing: While a great deal is always tempting, hair salons with cheap prices may be setting them so low because they can’t compete with other nearby salons in either skill or service. On the other hand, high prices don’t necessarily mean high quality – the salon may be inflating their rates to create the look of prestige.Choose a salon with reasonable prices that you can afford, and be sure sure to account for your stylist’s 10-15% tip (and yes, you should always tip the stylist if you’re happy with your cut).
Location: Hair salons in malls are busy places, frequently trafficked by walk-ins and passers-by in need of a quick trim. As such, they may not provide the attentive service that you and your tresses need (and deserve).Beware the salon in a run-down shopping center next to payday loan offices and convenience stores - the rent in these locations is low, and customers don’t tend to be picky. Finally, proximity to where you live may not be the best indicator of a quality stylist, but it’s a definite plus when you need to make an emergency appointment after a DIY hair color mishap!
Services: A hair salon that can offer extensions, straightening treatments and other high-end professional services is often a sign of hairstylists who are up to date on the latest trends and technology in hair care. Just make sure the salon isn’t hiking up their prices on regular cuts and coloring for the added convenience of one-stop shopping. Unrelated services like manicures, pedicures and waxing are a great bonus, as long as it’s clear that hairstyling is the salon’s primary focus. Note that manicurists and the like should also receive a $1-$3 tip.
Customer Service: The most telling sign of salon quality is how much their employees seem to care. This applies not only to your hairstylist, but the other stylists and employees as well. The first time you visit, your stylist should ask you several questions about what lengths, styles and colors you like for your hair and make suggestions on what she feels will suit you best. You should feel comfortable telling her what you want and if you’re displeased with your cut. If she reacts defensively or doesn’t seem like she’s listening, move on.

May is skin cancer awarness month

Skin cancer is the most common of all cancer
types and the number of skin cancer cases has
been on the rise for the past few decades.
Currently, more than 1 million skin cancers
are diagnosed each year in the United States.
That’s more than cancers of the prostate,
breast, lung, colon, uterus, ovaries, and
pancreas combined.
The good news is that there is a lot you can do
to protect yourself and your family from skin
cancer, or to catch it early enough so that it
can be treated effectively. Most skin cancers
are caused by too much exposure to ultraviolet
(UV) rays. Much of this exposure comes from
the sun, but some may come from manmade
sources, such as tanning beds.
Nonmelanoma skin cancers (usually basal cell
and squamous cell cancers) are the most
common cancers of the skin. They are called
nonmelanoma because this group of cancers
includes all skin cancers except one, malignant
melanoma. Cancers that develop from
melanocytes, the pigment-producing cells of
the skin, are called melanoma.

American Cancer Society

How Much Do You Know
About Sun Safety?
Sun safety is not just for vacation. Are you
sun-safe every day? Take this quiz, then check
your answers on the back of this page!
1. True or false: I can’t get skin cancer, because my
routine (work, drive to work, indoor hobbies, and
vacations) doesn’t include any outdoor activities.
2. True or false: My husband should use sunscreen at
football games, even though he only goes (and gets
a burn!) once or twice a year.
3. True or false: If I’m wearing sunscreen, I can stay in
the sun as long as I want.
4. True or false: A sunscreen labeled SPF 30 blocks
twice as much UV radiation as one labeled SPF 15.
5. True or false: It’s safe to let my children stay in the
pool all day if they slip on a T-shirt after a couple
hours and reapply sunscreen to their faces, arms,
and legs.
6. How often do you need to reapply water-resistant
sunscreen?
a. every 2 hours or sooner
b. after sweating or swimming
c. after you towel dry
d. all of the above
7. True or false: Getting a “base tan” at an indoor tanning
salon is as good way to prevent sunburn when I
go to the beach later this summer.
8. What are the two most common (and painful!) sunscreen
mistakes?
a. choosing an SPF below 15 and missing spots
b. using too little and waiting too long to reapply
9. Now put it all together. You applied sunscreen at
12:00 noon for an afternoon of reading beside the
pool. At 2:00 p.m., which one of the following actions
would best protect your skin?
a. slip on a long cotton sundress
b. move to the shade
c. reapply sunscreen

Does your sunscreen work???

Does your sunscreen work? An investigation of nearly 1,000 brand-name sunscreen products finds that 4 out of 5 contain chemicals that may pose health hazards or don't adequately protect skin from the sun's damaging rays. Some of the worst offenders are leading brands like Coppertone, Banana Boat, and Neutrogena.
More than a million cases of skin cancer are diagnosed in the U.S. every year, but FDA still hasn't finalized sunscreen standards first announced 30 years ago. Meanwhile, companies are free to claim but not provide broad spectrum protection. Until FDA requires that all sunscreens be safe and effective, Environmental Working Group's comprehensive sunscreen guide—including a list of 173 products that offer very good sun protection—fills in the gaps.

Interesting article at ewg.com Watch what you are paying for or being sold some over the counter cosmetics are useless cream. Check and see how they are rated at ewg.com Compare the so called active ingredients on cosmetic cream and see how far down the list that ingredient may be. Finding the right stylist. Is your stylist old school?

How much experience should you look for?
New hair stylists
New hair stylists often have lots of enthusiasm, ideas and state of the art technical hair styling skills. They are usually very knowledgeable about the latest in hair technologies. The downside is that they simply have not encountered enough outcomes to develop the intuition necessary to know what will work best in a variety of situations. There are good as well as the not so good hair stylists in this category, just choose wisely.
This is one situation where the salon can make the difference. Salons that have training and mentoring programs for new stylists also tend to have better stylists, particularly among recent graduates. The additional training in cutting, styling, coloring and other techniques results in a more knowledgeable professional who is prepared to deal with a broader range of possible problems. If the salon has mandatory requirements for attendance at training classes, this is a good sign.
Maturing hair stylists
Generally, a hair stylist who has been in the business over three years, but under thirty years is your best bet. Think of it this way. If they are still in the business after some years, it's a reasonable conclusion that they have established a following of clients. They have enough clients who give them a vote of confidence to keep them in the hair salon business. They have developed a style of their own.
Good older stylists stay up on the current trends and they still have the enthusiasm, creativity and willingness to try new hair styles. They are the suggestors, and the ones who are not only committed to the business, but also to your best image. Again, as you already know, there are the good and the bad in each category. There are some older stylists who are stuck in a rut and just working for the money. You'll want to avoid them.
Been around forever
There are many hair stylists who begin to burn out, get tired of trying new things, and who will settle into ruts. They lose excitement, and every client, even new ones, becomes a chore. They will keep doing the same old things over and over again. They may have a following of somewhat loyal customers, but most of them will have been wearing the same style for years. Other customers will drift away from these stylists.
You need to use your own best judgment here. The number of years working in the industry isn't the only indication of burn out. Burnout can occur quickly in a hair stylist. I've known hair stylists who were burnt out after only three years in the business. Yet, don't assume that a hair stylist who has been around a while is burnt out. I've known hair stylists who have been cutting hair 30 years and more, and who are as fresh as the day they came out of hair styling school.

You get what you pay for in non-professional products

Ah, the never-ending debate over professional and non-professional hair-care products. In the past, this debate was resolved easily with a famous quote, "You get what you pay for." But today, the line between professional and non-professional products has become blurry due to the emergence of inexpensive professional products and expensive non-professional products. You see, it used to be that you almost always paid $10 for a bottle of shampoo from the salon. Non-professional shampoos, on the other hand, only cost a couple of dollars. Today, however, you can spend as much or more on a bottle of shampoo from your local department store as you can for a bottle from the salon. The reason that this is so is because most professional product lines have not raised their prices in years, while new shampoos and conditioners being introduced to the non-professional market have been given packaging and price tags to mirror their in-salon competition. So, now the only thing that separates the non-professional from the professional is the quality standard by which each product line is produced. Just think about it this way: All products made to be used in salons by professionals can only be retailed in salons. That means that the products must be of the highest quality. If they weren’t, beauticians simply wouldn’t use them. Never will you find a professional product that causes build up or leaves the hair feeling dry and brittle. Professional shampoos will also not strip hair of color or vital moisture. If you could get these products or products of similar quality in any department store, why wouldn’t your beautician use them? While not all non-professional products are bad, you do run the risk of choosing a product that could cause problems like build up, dryness, breakage, color fading, lifelessness, frizziness and a host of other problems. That means that if you choose to use a non-professional product, you should monitor your hair closely to look for any adverse affects. Also, keep in mind how much you are spending. While it makes perfect sense to choose a non-professional product at huge savings over a professional one, it doesn’t make much sense to spend as much on a non-professional product as you would for a guaranteed, professional product. In the end, the choice to use professional products or not to use them is yours. Just remember to watch your wallet and most importantly watch your hair. Choose products that are kind to both
