Women and men fall into certain hair-prep routines. Through years of trying various products, typically each person finds a favorite and sticks with it, no matter what the cost. Whether it is a rich-smelling pomade or a deep conditioning treatment, once a frontrunner appears, it’s tough to pry it from the arsenal. But are your preferred products healthy for your hair? Check your cabinet and see if your sprays and serums match up with these five products that experts say promote healthy locks.
- Purifying shampoo. Knock out the buildup of hair products with a purifying shampoo once a month. These products can revive unhealthy hair, but Kaz Amor, a color expert at Warren Tricomi Salon in Los Angeles, says it’s important not to overuse them. “To prevent slick roots, use purifiers once a month, tops," he says. These shampoos help, but only in moderation.

- A protein conditioner. Lathering up with regular shampoo and conditioner isn’t enough. Zoe Draelos, MD, editor of The Journal of Cosmetic Dermatology, recommends that women select a protein conditioner that can strengthen hair up to 10 percent by temporarily filling in the hair’s cuticle. “Look for everyday conditioners."

- A superabsorbent towel. Not all towels are created equal. That old, scratchy towel that you twist into a cornucopia on your head isn’t helping your hair. Aside from breaking hair as it’s churned into place, garden-variety towels do not absorb enough water. A microfiber towel, specifically for hair, is the best bet to ensure less damage and better drying time. In fact, Women’s Health magazine compared the drying time of a normal towel to that of an absorbent, microfiber one and found women spent far less time blow-drying their hair. According to their experiment, hair dries 25 percent faster with a better towel.

- Heat protecting spray. Extreme heat isn’t healthy for hair, but let’s face it, flatirons and hair dryers are a staple in just about every bathroom. Since these hot tools aren’t going anywhere soon, it’s best to use a protecting product before inducing locks into heat stroke, according to Allure magazine.
