Little tips about body waxing!!
Tisa, an expert waxer, not to mention all around cool person, was kind enough to answer some of
our wackiest questions.
1. Is there anything we should do to prepare for a bikini
wax? Does using a exfoliating cloth or scrub help?
A) Hair must be ¼ of an inch long for the best result.
B) If you are shaving, stop three weeks prior to coming in
for your waxing.
C) You should use a scrub, loofah, or exfoliating mitt for
the weeks proceeding your appointment, to work out any existing ingrown hairs
and to make sure to the best result.
2. What’s the
difference between hard wax and soft wax?
A) Hard wax is amazing on coarse hair and sensitive areas,
because as it cools and hardens it grabs the hair and lifts up off of the skin,
so when it is removed it only grabs the hair and doesn’t pull on the skin.
B) Most people who experience soft wax will prefer hard wax
because they find it less painful.
C) Hard wax can only be apply small section or the wax will
break, so it is not efficient on large areas of the body.
D) Soft wax is applied and removed with some form of cloth.
Its great for finer hair and works much better on large areas of the body.
E) Also, hard wax leaves no sticky residue, so it is easier
to clean up than soft wax.
3. What’s the longest amount of time you recommend people go
between waxes?
A) I recommend coming in every 3-6 weeks for a regular waxing
appointments.
B) You can wait longer than 6 weeks, but you run into the
risk that the waxing experience will be like getting it for the first time
again.
4. Clients crazy to think they can do it at home?
It’s a great idea, waxing seems simple when you see an
experience professional doing it, actually takes quite a bit of skills. If you
don’t know what you are doing, you can hurt yourself really badly, like
bruising yourself, burning yourself, or lift skin off. I had clients who tried
at home wax kit, came back to me with horrible experiences.
5. What’s the best way to avoid painful wax experiences? How
do we know if our waxer is doing a good job?
A) Research!
B) Your first time waxing, make sure you are going to the
best possible waxer you can find.
C) Always ask your friends, research on the internet. Call
the salon and ask what type of wax they use and how much experience the service
provider has.
D) Steer clear of nail salon waxing.
E) Find someone who specializes in waxing.
6. How do you feel about nair?
I use it when I was in high school. I burnt my upper lip. It
smells bad, messy and dangerous putting chemicals on your skin if you don’t
have to.
7. Will a good (expensive) wax still result in ingrown hairs?
If you are prone to ingrown hair, even a good wax can’t
change that. You need to exfoliate at home and using tend skin that prevent and
heal ingrown hairs.
8. If someone wants a shape, like a hearts.
I don’t do fancy shapes. I stick with classic landing strips,
triangle and patch.
9. What’s the worst thing to do before getting wax?
A) Drinking caffeine, pms and shaving will all make waxing
more uncomfortable.
10. Are you worried that laser will take over? Seems less and
less people are getting waxing these days.
I have no immediate concern about that. They have not
perfected the art of hair removal with laser yet. It is rare that someone gets
a perfect result. Getting a laser hair removal can be consuming and
painful and expensive. Some day the technology will probably affect my
business, but I haven’t had a problem yet. I do recommend a couple laser
treatments to clients with a lot of hair and serious ingrown hair problems. It
makes their regular waxing service much easier for them.
