Awaken With a Fall Facial

• Posted by REFLECTIONS OF YOU Fairfax • Permalink

As the lazy days of summer wane away and the crisp, cooler air of fall prevails, skin may look a bit drab from all the abuse of summer. Too much sun, loss of moisture and even clogged pores from sunscreen can leave your face screaming for a good exfoliation and rehydration.
The best way to remember to schedule a fall facial is to imagine the dry, falling leaves that drift to the ground in the autumn. Remember how they crunch when you jump in them or walk through them? Is your skin as dry as those dead, lifeless leaves? The changing colors of the leaves are your sign that it is time to remove dry dead skin, de-stress and get skin ready for the busy, but joyous holiday season.
Facials offer many benefits that will brighten your skin, help you feel invigorated and give your skin that youthful glow again. We start your treatment with a good cleaning followed by an exfoliating scrub to slough off dry, dead skin. It is gentle but offers enough abrasiveness to get rid of dry patches and dull color. It is estimated that skin rejuvenates every 28 days, so as you move from one season to the next, it is especially important to remove old skin and reveal new, fresh skin.
The exfoliation treatment is typically followed by a gentle massage. The massage will help restore circulation to your face and can even help reduce puffiness. Plus, it just feels glorious and eases away the stresses of back-to-school and end-of summer busyness. Most facials also include a massage of the neck area and possibly even arms and shoulders.
One of the more important parts of the facial is the application of products meant to nourish your skin and add important nutrients and moisture. Our skincare specialist will choose the best products for you based on your skins’ problem areas and will create a balance that restores health to your skin. The restoration portion of the facial may include a mask, toner, lotions and oils. It may be a one-step application or involve several stages of applying various products. Since facials are often customized to the client, each person’s facial experience is likely to be just a bit different.
A professional facial will go a step further than simply removing the drab buildup of damaged summer skin. Our skincare specialist will nourish and moisturize the fresh skin under all that old skin in preparation for the coming winter, when furnaces come on and air is naturally dryer and equally as hard on skin as it is during the summer months. By adding back the perfect balance of nutrients for your skin type, they will take you from end of summer drab to fall fresh fab . It will be the best hour or so that you spend this fall on your beauty routine.

Ladies Tame the Summer Hair Frizz Reflections of You Fairfax Salon and Spa

Tame the Summer Flyaways

August 12th, 2013 • Posted by REFLECTIONS OF YOU Fairfax • Permalink

Hot summer days are great for a tan, but can wreak havoc on hair. Heat and humidity can turn a stunning hair day into a frizzy mess. Dry hair sucks up the moisture in the air, which causes it to expand and kink. The result is a head full of frizzy flyaways that no brush can tame, but it doesn’t have to be this way. There are some simple steps anyone can take to make locks lay down. Check out these tips from A-list stylists.
  • Don’t Rush.
Leonardo Manetti,co-founder of ION Studio in New York says women that rush out the down with damp hair will pay for it. On toasty days, Manetti says it’s vital to thoroughly dry hair to prevent frizz. Split hair into sections, use a rolling brush, and blow-dry every part.
  • Go ionic.
Using an ionic blow dryer compresses the cuticle and prevents hair from ballooning. Attachments that force air through a smaller space can also help prevent frizz, according to Allure magazine.
  • Rub hand cream into your hair.
Did you know a little hand cream could fight frizz? Rita Ragone, celebrity stylist and makeup artist from Astor Place Hair told Daily News about this easy tip. "Everyone in the summertime has to slather their bodies with lotion. Whatever's left over on your hands, you can actually run through from midshaft to the ends of your hair and you will not have frizzies at all."
  • Brush in a little product.
If the frizzy flyaways are a summer bummer, beauty experts from Allure suggest breaking out a toothbrush to rub in a little product. For straight hair, spritz a little shine spray on the brush and comb down wispy hair. For curly hair, put a drop of anti-frizz cream on the brush and tap down the halo of flyaways.
  • Place a frozen towel on your head.
It might sound crazy, but this quick fix does the trick. Rita Ragone suggests putting a towel in the freezer, get it nice and cold, and then wrap hair into it. "I do this on my celebrity clients because they're always in a rush," explains Ragone. "Just put it on your head and count to 10. You take it off and the frizziness comes right out."

Healthy Summer Hair Reflections of You Fairfax and ROY Salon Fair Lakes

Healthy Summer Hair

During the summer, Talia Moore spends a lot of time in the pool with her kids. The Minneapolis mother of three says the family practically lives in their pool, especially on hot, humid days. While Moore loves to spend time with her children, she realizes all the pool-time zaps the nutrients and color out of her shoulder-length blond hair.

“My hair battles heat and chlorine all summer,” Moore said. “Not to mention I am constantly washing my hair so I don’t wander around with a bizarre ‘pool 'do.’”

Moore is not alone. Everyone struggles to keep their hair healthy during the dog days of summer. In fact, Charmel Heltsley, Campus Director at Minnesota School of Cosmetology, says summer is the most damaging season on hair.

“During the summer our hair is introduced to all sorts of issues,” Heltsley said. “We sweat more so we take more showers and style our hair more often. Plus, we’re in the pool dealing with chlorine and chemicals that suck color and nutrients out of our hair.”

Heltsley offers these tips to protect hair, while still enjoying some fun in the sun.

  • Don’t jump into the pool with dry hair. It might seem strange, but Heltsley says people should get their hair wet before doing a cannonball into the water. “Wet your hair and then add a little shampoo that has some fillers in it, something cheap will work,” Heltsley said. “This prevents your hair from soaking up chemicals.”
  • Rock a Kentucky Derby hat. Protect hair by wearing a hat. “Break out that big floppy hat and have some fun,” she said. “The hat will keep the sun from hitting your hair, plus they look cute.”
  • Eating healthy leads to healthy hair. A healthy diet is important during summer. “Hair is a reflection of what you put into your body,” she said. “If you eat healthy and stay hydrated, you’re choices will be rewarded with beautiful, glossy hair.”
  • Don’t over wash. Summertime usually means a lot of cool showers, but washing hair too frequently isn’t good for it. “It’s best to wash your hair two to three times a week,” Heltsley said. “Break out the dry shampoo if you need to. Just spray that underneath your hair, style as usual, and you’ll be good to go.”

Heltley says there is no need to avoid summer activities, just take a few precautions to keep hair healthy during heat waves. There are also some anti-frizz products and oil products which, when used in moderation, can also infuse life back into hair. For advice on products, ask your hair stylist what’s best.

Soft Supple Skin in Minutes Reflections of You Fairfax Va. Salon and Spa

Soft, Supple Skin in Minutes                                                  Posted by REFLECTIONS OF YOU Fairfax

Itchy dry skin can be an annoyance in the summer months. With more sun exposure and air conditioned buildings, our skin becomes dull and depleted. That soft baby skin that we dream of turns into alligator skin and we increase our lotion use to get rid of the scales. There is a quick home treatment that can help with dryness of the skin and relax you as well.
Steam treatments are a great way to lock in moisture and give your skin a more long lasting softness. The pores are opened and ready to soak in the moisture after steaming the skin. This type of treatment also increases circulation in the skin, so moisture is coming at your skin both internally and externally.
There are different ways to expose the skin to steam. Warm compresses work well for smaller areas. A hot shower is an easy way to open the pores, or even standing outside the shower with the bathroom door shut, so that the room fills with steam. For the face you can just boil water on the stove and lean over the steam with a towel over the head to contain the mist.
Applying oils after the steam bath is a last step. Using natural oils is a simple way to lock in the moisture. Coconut oil feeds your cells to keep them moisturized and healthy. Jojoba oil is another option for its humectant properties. As a humectant it draws moisture to the top layers of the skin to keep the cells moisturized from within the body. It is also a natural thin wax and seals the moisture. Hemp seed oil contains essential fatty acids that help keep the skin cells healthy and glowing. The best option is a combination of the three. If too much oil is applied, let the moisture soak in for a few minutes and then wipe off excess with a dry cloth.
That alligator skin will be transformed back to soft, supple skin in just a few minutes. And you will have taken some time for yourself in the process.
We are your experts for any skin care questions and look forward to seeing you on your next visit.
